Some people buy flowers as a thank you but in 1978, Andrew Gold went the extra mile and wrote a whole song – and unwittingly scored an enduring hit. This sincerely titled odyssey of laid-back '70s yacht rock became the star of the small screen after it was used as the opening theme tune for the Emmy Award-winning Golden Girls sitcom. Sung by The Golden Girls themselves aka Bea Arthur, Betty White, Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty, its lyrics about old age seemed to resonate with the much-loved TV show's silver-haired cast of stars: "And when we both get older / With walking canes and hair of gray / Have no fear, even though it's hard to hear / I will stand real close and say / Thank you for being a friend." Andrew Gold once remarked that he was in his "Brian Wilson phase" when he wrote "Thank You for Being a Friend," which was featured on the LA mainstay's third album, All This and Heaven Too (1978) and reached Number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart that year.
