Dan Fogelberg's "Heart Hotels" is an uplifting orchestral-pop song about loneliness that belies its desolate subject-matter. Built from a kaleidoscopic patchwork of sounds – including congas, saxophone, electronic wind instrument the lyricon (as played by renowned session musician Tom Scott), and various orchestral arrangements – the track elevates the folk-rock of Dan Fogelberg to another realm of craftsmanship. Released in 1979, "Heart Hotels" was featured on his 1979 album Phoenix as the second of two single releases from the LP. Phoenix went all the way to number three on the US Billboard Pop Albums chart and number 42 in the UK, also paving the way for the success of 1981 follow-up The Innocent Age, which boasted vocal contributions from Joni Mitchell and Emmylou Harris as well as containing a track originally intended for Phoenix, "Leader," a poignant tribute to his father.
