"Sleigh bells ring, are you listening (Doo) / In the lane, snow is glistening / A beautiful sight, we're happy tonight / Walking in a winter wonderland..." In spite of its cheery lyrics and celebratory association, the origin story of this snowglobe-conjuring song "Winter Wonderland" is not quite as cheery. Bedridden with tuberculous in the West Mountain Sanitarium in Scranton, Pennsylvania, when lyricist Richard Bernhard Smith looked out his window longingly at children frolicking in the snow of Honesdale's Central Park, he dreamed of getting out. Sadly dying of the disease on his 34th birthday on September 29, 1935, he nonetheless created a musical legacy with a Christmas staple that went on to be covered by over 200 different artists. Christmas music and pop artist Amy Grant took on the song in 1992 and came up with this jazzy, saxophone-tinged, muzaky version that she featured on her tenth studio album, Home for Christmas.
