"Winter Wonderland" was written in 1934 by composer Felix Bernard and lyricist Richard Bernhard Smith, who came up with the lyrics after seeing his hometown's Central Park covered in snow while being treated for tuberculosis. It was first recorded in 1934 by Himber and his Hotel Ritz-Carlton Orchestra and further popularized by Guy Lombardo later that year. A story about a winter romance, "Winter Wonderland" was covered numerous times in the following years, including recordings by Johnny Mercer, Johnny Mathis, and Perry Como. In 1960, singer Ella Fitzgerald offered a jazzier take on "Winter Wonderland" in her Verve release Ella Wishes You a Swinging Christmas. Unlike her second Christmas album from 1967, the album featured mostly secular holiday and winter songs and featured orchestral arrangements by American actor and musician Frank DeVol. In time, The Queen of Jazz's rendition of "Winter Wonderland" went on to become one of the most popular versions of the beloved holiday classic.
