Unlike most of the songs in the Christmas canon, "Grown-Up Christmas List" doesn't try to cater to the feel-good nature of the holiday season. Instead, it offers a heartbreaking take on the Christmas wishlist, asking for an end to war, heartbreak, and loneliness. Composed by songwriter David Foster and lyricist Linda Thompson-Jenner, it was originally included in Foster's 1990 non-seasonal album River of Love. Featuring vocals by singer Natalie Cole, the original version enjoyed little success upon its release and it wouldn't be until 1992 that the song really picked up after being covered by pop singer-songwriter Amy Grant. Included in her commercially acclaimed second Christmas album Home for Christmas, Amy Grant's poignant rendition of "Grown-Up Christmas List" contained an additional verse of her own authorship. Although it initially failed to enter any national charts, it finally made its way to Billboard's Christian Digital Song Sales in 2011, peaking at Number 11.
