Tom Petty wants to "glide down over Mulholland," and "move west down Ventura Boulevard" in this exhilarating love letter to the San Fernando Valley region of Los Angeles that recreates the thrill of being footloose and fancy-free after a breakup. "It's a long day, livin' in Reseda / There's a freeway, runnin' through the yard / And I'm a bad boy, 'cause I don't even miss her / I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart," sings Tom Petty in the opening verse, delivering his lines over an understated acoustic backdrop. Shortly after the drums slide into view, the song picks up pace before erupting into the simple, yet epic chorus ("And I'm free, free fallin' / Yeah I'm free, free fallin'"). This thrillseeking folk-rock anthem was written by Tom Petty and his writing partner Jeff Lynne (who also turns up on backing vocals and bass guitar) and reached Number 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart in January 1990. "Free Fallin'" is the opening track on Tom Petty's debut solo album, Full Moon Fever.
