It was written by the band’s singer Bono who was in a committed relationship while instantly becoming a rock star. In the book U2 by U2, he said, "I was at least two people: the person who is so responsible, protective and loyal and the vagrant and idler in me who just wants to run from responsibility." He described finally making peace with the tension, realizing it probably made him a better artist. He must have decided on “with you" because he and Alison Hewson have been married since 1982 and have four children.
