You can 'stand him up at the gates of hell' but he 'won't back down,' so says the late legend Tom Petty in his 1989 hit single, "I Won't Back Down," penned as a defiant response to an arsonist attack that burned down the artist's family home while they were all inside. The song – which made it to Number 12 on the Billboard Hot 100 and hung around at the top of the Album Rock Tracks chart for five weeks – marked the first single from Full Moon Fever, the debut solo studio album he was working on just after the attack and featured George Harrison on backing vocals and guitar as well as Jeff Lynne on guitar. Ringo Starr played drums in the track's video but session musician Phil Jones stepped in to play on the album itself. "I Won't Back Down" took on new meaning in later years following the September 11 attacks, with radio stations seizing on the overarching theme of survival in the face of adversity.
