As a result, the 2022 follow-up Dawn FM is an even more ambitious piece of work; a sprawling concept album built around the premise of a radio station in purgatory. “Don’t Break My Heart,” one of the album’s standout tracks; an 80s-influenced dance-pop song with swelling synth flourishes and layered beats, with lyrics about romantic anxiety. “Don’t Break My Heart” was both written and produced by The Weeknd along with Daniel Lopatin (of Oneohtrix Point Never), Swedish pop producer Max Martin, Oscar Holter, and Matt Cohn. The Weeknd’s gamble paid off, with Dawn FM earning rave reviews by critics, many identifying “Don’t Break My Heart” as one of the album’s high points. It was also quite commercially successful, debuting at Number 2 on the Billboard 200 chart.
