The "pennies from heaven" idiom describes surprising good luck or good fortune and informs this oft-covered song, which was first conceived in 1936 with music by Arthur Johnston and lyrics by Johnny Burke. After Bing Crosby with Georgie Stoll and his Orchestra brought the ditty to life in the 1936 film of the same name (in which Bing Crosby famously invested his own money) it became a magnet for other stars to follow, with cover versions by Louis Armstrong, Frank Sinatra, and even Led Zeppelin. The Skyliners took on the metaphor-rich jazz standard for their self-titled album of 1959 and infused the song with a doo-wop flavour, packing their vocal harmonies into poetic lines like "Every time it rains, it rains pennies from heaven / Don't you know each cloud contains pennies from heaven? / You'll find your fortune's fallin' all over the town / Be sure that your umbrella is upside down".

Thanks for a great job on this wonderful tune. I hope you’ll be doing more doo wop in the future.
