By 1971, legendary rock and roll pioneers The Rolling Stones were way past the point of covering old blues numbers, instead establishing themselves as truly revolutionary and eclectic songwriters. One example of such eclecticism is their 1971 single Wild Horses,” a sorrowful country ballad exploring the pains of being out on the road, a million miles from your home and loved ones. The song was written collaboratively by frontman Mick Jagger and guitarist Keith Richards; the latter had the guitar riff and the chorus line, while the former crafted the song’s delicate verses. Wild Horses was produced by longtime Rolling Stones collaborator Jimmy Miller, and was included as part of the band’s highly acclaimed ninth studio album Sticky Fingers. It was also released as the second US-only single for the album, following Brown Sugar.” The song peaked at Number 28 in the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
