The Rolling Stones have covered many songs from American R&B artists. In 1965, the British rockers included The Drifters' "Under the Boardwalk" on their 12 X 5 album. The Drifters’ original recording date was scheduled for May 21, 1964 but the lead singer, Rudy Lewis, died of a suspected heroin overdose the night before. Rather than reschedule the recording, another singer who had recently returned to the group, Johnny Moore, sang the lead vocal. The song was an instant hit and has remained a pop music standard. Besides the Stones, it has been covered by Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Lynn Anderson, and John Mellencamp.
