The Drifters' late lead singer Rudy Lewis was all set to record vocals for the song that made the group famous but tragically died the morning he was due to enter the studio on May 20, 1964. Johnny Moore was drafted in as his replacement and the newly formed quartet set about recording one of the '60s best-known and most treasured tunes. Written by Kenny Young and Arthur Resnick and recorded by The Drifters in 1964, "Under the Boardwalk's" recognisable güiro (a Latin American percussion instrument) intro segues into sweeping violins for a bittersweet doo-wop-dipped pop-soul jewel tinged with melancholy. The song, which made it to Number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on August 22, 1964, describes a romantic seaside rendezvous that takes place "under the boardwalk," and has been covered by numerous other artists over the years, including Billy Joel, Bette Midler, Sam & Dave, the Tom Tom Club, the Rolling Stones, John Mellencamp and more.
