The Rolling Stones plunge into darkness for this haunting story of a woman who appears to have died. "I see a line of cars and they’re all painted black / With flowers and my love, both never to come back," sings Mick Jagger in the first verse, alluding to some sort of funeral procession. Consumed by sadness, the grief-stricken protagonist is now desperate to paint the world black, as the iconic title suggests. Released in 1966, "Paint It Black" was the brainchild of Mick Jagger and Keith Richards and notably featured a sitar part from multi-instrumentalist Brian Jones—who had started to experiment with Eastern instruments—as well as borrowing touches from Indian, Middle Eastern, and Eastern European traditional music. "Paint It Black" served as the opening track to the American iteration of The Rolling Stones' 1966 studio album Aftermath and rocketed to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100, where it remained for two weeks.
