Co-written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards, "Paint It Black" was a huge hit for The Rolling Stones in 1966 who sailed to the top of the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song, a sweltering stew of Middle Eastern, Indian and Eastern European flavours, is a harrowing exploration of grief, told from the perspective of a grieving lover who is trapped in a dark spiral of melancholy ("I see a red door and I want it painted black / No colours anymore, I want them to turn black"). A substantial number of artists have put their stamp on "Paint It Black" over the years, from U2 to Vanessa Carlton. In 2023, country troupe Zac Brown Band decided to step up to the plate, stitching together a fittingly stirring homage to the song complete with a lengthy fiddle intro. Zac Brown Band's version of the soul-shaking tune was included on Stoned Cold Country, a Nashville tribute to The Rolling Stones, which was released in 2023.
