Sometimes a movie is defined by a well-placed musical cue. “Hot Chocolate,” from the 2004 film The Polar Express, is a great example of a musical scene being one of the main elements people remember from the film. American actor Tom Hanks stars as the Conductor, and he leads the performance serving chocolate to the various children aboard The Polar Express (the sole rule is “to never, ever let it cool”). The song was written by Glen Ballard (best known for co-producing Alanis Morisette's 1995 hit album Jagged Little Pill) and Alan Silvestri, and its melody reappears as a motif several times throughout the movie. The soundtrack album to The Polar Express, titled The Polar Express: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America, selling over 700,000 copies in the United States. It is considered the best-selling motion picture soundtrack/holiday album hybrid in Nielsen SoundScan history.
