Philadelphia-born soul group The Intruders galloped their way to the Top 10 with their 1968 single "Cowboys to Girls," an R&B soother written by Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff that had a pioneering impact on the trajectory of Philadelphia soul. The single topped the R&B chart and peaked at Number 6 on the Billboard Hot 100, scoring a huge hit for The Intruders, who formed in 1960 and originally comprised Sam "Little Sonny" Brown, Eugene "Bird" Daughtry, Phillip "Phil" Terry and Robert "Big Sonny" Edwards, and were largely steered by notable American songwriting and production team Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff. "Cowboys to Girls" has popped up in various other guises throughout the decades. In 1980, Chicano Rock group Tierra interpolated a few lines from the lyrics of "Cowboys to Girls" for their remake of "Together" by The Intruders, while Mos Def sampled the song on his 2009 track "Pistola" from his album The Ecstatic.
