Formed in Philadelphia in 1965, the American R&B vocal group The Delfonics reached their peak of popularity in the late 1960s with a series of commercially successful singles written by vocalist William "Poogie" Hart. "La-La (Means I Love You)" (1968), their first big major hit, reached Number 2 on the US R&B charts and established them as one of the most exciting acts in the Philly Soul scene. The Delfonics would go on to release a string of memorable charting singles throughout that year, including "I'm Sorry," "Break Your Promise," and "Ready or Not Here I Come (Can't Hide from Love)." Written by William Hart and producer and arranger Thom Bell, the latter was a romantic R&B jam driven forward by the group's lush vocal harmonies and a groovy backing track featuring prominent string and brass arrangements. Shortly after its release on October 22, 1968, "Ready or Not Here I Come" peaked at Number 14 on the US R&B charts and Number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100. In 1996, the song gained new life after being interpolated by hip-hop group The Fugees on their hit single "Ready or Not."
