And though the original version is regarded as a classic, it was Aretha Franklin’s explosive cover that made the song a worldwide success. Aretha Franklin recorded the song with producer Jerry Wexler on February 14, 1967, and it was released as part of the singer’s tenth album I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You. When “Respect” was released as a single, it immediately caught on as a hit, spending two weeks at the top of the Billboard Pop Singles chart.
