Saskatchewan ensemble The Dead South formed in 2012 launched their career in 2013 with the self-released five-track The Ocean Went Mad and We Were to Blame EP, which mixed a rousing folky bluegrass aesthetic with a maverick punk attitude, bridging a gap between tradition and rebellion. The toe-tapping, barnstorming "Banjo Odyssey" was featured on the aforementioned EP and, to get a sense of the song, the clue's in the name; here the band set sail on a Greek-sized odyssey of banjo proportions. Littered with tongue-in-cheek digs at bluegrass ("Mother said "She's my brother's daughter" / And I don't even know who's my father / I guess she's my cousin"), “Banjo Odyssey” tells the forbidden tale of two cousins in love and on the run, told through the gravelly vocals of Nate Hilts who cavorts with dark bluegrass stereotypes that are not meant to be taken literally.
