The Dead South confront painful subject matter on their ghoulishly titled 2014 track "In Hell I'll Be in Good Company." Opening with a drawn-out whistling intro that soon segues into the first verse, the rootsy song – featured on the band's debut studio album Good Company – sketches out a gut-wrenching tale of domestic violence, murder and death, in which a man kills his wife. "I see my red head, messed bed, tear shed, queen bee / My squeeze / The stage it smells, tells, hell's bells, miss-spells / Knocks me on my knees / It didn't hurt, flirt, blood squirt, stuffed shirt / Hang me on a tree / After I count down, three rounds, in hell I'll be in good company," sing the Juno-award winning folk-bluegrass musical ensemble, who are based in Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada. This hit song features cello and banjo and was featured in US fantasy drama series American Gods and superhero series The Umbrella Academy.
