This elegant saxophone-streaked reflection from 1971 maintains The Carpenters' now-longheld mastery of the maudlin yet stately ballad. Composed by singer/songwriter Paul Williams, who wrote the lyrics, and Roger Nichols, "Rainy Days and Mondays" puts that universal feeling of the blues into song; "Talkin' to myself and feelin' old / Sometimes I'd like to quit / Nothin' ever seems to fit / Hanging around / Nothin' to do but frown / Rainy days and Mondays always get me down," sings Karen Carpenter in the first verse. "Rainy Days and Mondays"—notable for being The Carpenters' second Nichols/Williams hit following "We've Only Just Begun"—was released as the opening track on The Carpenters' self-titled 1971 album (popularly known as the Tan Album), for which the duo picked up four Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year. The Carpenters won the Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus.

The instrumentals are really good, great for accompaniment vocals.
