Although "Superstar" was originally written by Bonnie Bramlett and Leon Russell, Karen Carpenter made it her own in 1971, soaring to the top of the East Listening charts and landing at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles with The Carpenters; the best-selling yet duo she formed with her brother Richard Carpenter. Her voice positively beams on lines like "Loneliness is a such a sad affair". The song, which is about a groupie who falls in love with a rockstar, was one of the treasures contained on The Carpenters' landmartk third self-titled album (also released in 1971) – which earned the pair Carpenters four Grammy Award nominations including Album of the Year and won the Best Contemporary Vocal Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus –and also inspired the title of Todd Haynes experimental cult film: Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, which explored the last 17 years of the late troubled singer's life, as she struggled with anorexia.
