There’s a reason why, when filmmakers want to communicate the joy of infatuation, they often turn to the smash hit by The Carpenters, (They Long to Be) Close to You.” The song is a composition by the legendary songwriting duo of Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and was first recorded by Richard Chamberlain in 1963. Other versions of the song, by artists such as Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield, were also released; however, it was the version by The Carpenters that became an instantly recognizable success. Released in 1970 and included in the duo’s album Close to You, (They Long to Be) Close to You became The Carpenters’ breakthrough hit, staying at the top of the Billboard Hot 100 chart for four consecutive weeks. The song also earned a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Performance by a Duo, Group or Chorus in 1971, and has since become a go-to pop culture staple in film and television.

I would sing this song back in the day to my girlfriend, replacing the word 'boy' with 'girl' and I don't think anyone cared.

Thank Jesus for you! I have to sing at a wedding in Berlin and they want it on a USB stick and I was thinking, "How?" And there you were! If only you did musical theatre, as well! DeAnn
