Originally written by US soul legend Otis Redding along with Al Bell and Allen Jones in 1968, the Black Crowes recorded their version of the track for their debut album in 1990 and scored a huge hit. It was the breakout single that took the US rock troupe's career to stratospheric new heights after they had spent the past six years slogging away on the live circuit. The only cover song on 1990 LP Shake Your Money Maker, "Hard to Handle" topped the Billboard Album Rock Tracks chart as well as shooting to Number 26 on the Billboard Hot 100. Many artists have also put their stamp on the '60s soul favorite – including UK cult electronic act Lemon Jelly (2001), rapper Frankie Cutlass (1997), and reggae artist Capleton (1992) but none have dared mimic the Black Crowes and their bluesy, amped-up rendition of "Hard to Handle," which arguably remains the group's best-known and best-loved tune to this day.
