The song Mustang Sally has a long history, originating in 1965 as an R&B song by Mark Rice. Its lyrics are about a woman who wants nothing but to drive around her car all day. It was originally titled Mustang Mama,” but was changed to Mustang Sally after a suggestion by none other than Aretha Franklin. The song gained further popularity when it was covered by Wilson Pickett in 1966. Wilson Pickett’s version hit Number 6 on the US Billboard R&B charts, as well as Number 23 on the Pop charts. In 1991, the musical comedy-drama film The Commitments, which told the story of a music fan putting together a soul group in Ireland, featured the song prominently. In the film’s version, it was sung by Andrew Strong. It was released as a single from the film’s accompanying soundtrack album, reaching Number 63 in the UK Singles Chart. This version of the song gained critical acclaim, and the soundtrack album reached Number 8 on the Billboard 200 albums chart.
