The Beautiful South augmented the indie-pop sound of their third studio album 0898 (1992) with Miaow, a 12-track collection of worldy-wise contemporary pop numbers that showed the breadth of Dave Rotheray and Paul Heaton's songwriting. The album welcomed a new singer into the fold: Jacqui Abbott (who would go on to join the band for defining hits like "Rotterdam (or Anywhere)" and "Perfect 10." Her wistful, rootsy voice is given a starring role on this luscious cover of "Everybody's Talkin'", carrying the song's bucolic message of "going where the sun keeps shining through the pouring rain" from start to finish. "Everybody's Talkin' (Echoes)" was originally written and recorded by US singer-songwriter Fred Neil in 1966 and released in 1968. It was then popularised by Harry Nilsson who scored a hit with the song in 1969, going to number six on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and winning a Grammy Award after it played a prominent role in the classic movie Midnight Cowboy.
