In April 1987, Starship beamed down with the interstellar power ballad to end all power ballads. Co-written by future one-person hit factory Diane Warren and legendary songwriter Albert Hammond, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" explored the age-old theme of love triumphing over adversity ("And if this world runs out of lovers / We'll still have each other"). Delivered in duet form by the powerhouse vocals of Grace Slick and Mickey Thomas, "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" gave the San Francisco pop-rockers Starship their third number-one single to date, following the 1985 smash-hit "We Built This City" and 1986 ballad "Sara." The Oscar-nominated "Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now" was used as the theme to Michael Gottlieb's 1987 rom-com Mannequin and contained on Starship's second studio album, No Protection, which was released in 1987 and also spawned a Top 10 single in "It's Not Over ('Til It's Over)."
