When "gulf and western" torchbearer Jimmy Buffett passed away on 1 September 2023 due to complications from a rare form of skin cancer called Merkel-cell carcinoma, he left behind a legacy of tropical rock music in thrall to his popular brand of 'island escapism.' His live cover of "Everybody's Talkin'" may not be among his so-called 'Big 8' (tried-and-tested staples like 1977's "Margaritaville," of course, 1978's "Cheeseburger in Paradise") but it remains an enduring fan favourite, bringing a Caribbean twist to the original with added steelpans. The track, which was originally written and recorded by US singer-songwriter Fred Neil in 1966, and popularised by Harry Nilsson in 1969, first appeared as a recording on 2003's Meet Me in Margaritaville: The Ultimate Collection and here as part of Jimmy Buffett's 2005 album Live in Hawaii, recorded live at the Waikiki Shell in Honolulu on 28 January 2004 and at the Maui Arts & Cultural Center in Kahului on 30 January 2004.
