One of the definitive hits of the MTV generation, “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles is the very definition of an iconic pop song. Written by American songwriter and producer Liam Sternberg, the song was first offered to singer Tony Basil, who passed on it. It then made its way through various hands until it was given to the American pop group The Bangles to record. “Walk Like an Egyptian” was included in the group’s second LP Different Light (1986), and eventually released as the third promotional single from the album. It became one of the band’s breakthrough hits, peaking at Number 3 on the UK singles chart and Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100. “Walk Like an Egyptian” was accompanied by a successful music video, showing the band performing live as well as various shots of people imitating the “Egyptian dance.” Along with the success of the previous single “Manic Monday,” the album Different Light was also propelled to the top of the US Billboard 200 album chart, peaking at Number 2.
