Written in just one night after producer Jon Landau asked him to come up with a hit single for the album, "Dancing in the Dark" finds Springsteen at his most reflective, dealing with the downsides of fame and his struggles to write a commercial-sounding hit. Ironically enough, the song went on to top the Billboard US Mainstream Rock chart and peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming his highest-charting single to date. Since its release, "Dancing in the Dark" has sold over one million copies and helped its parent album become the best-selling album of The Boss's career. In 1985, the single earned Bruce Springsteen the first Grammy Award of his career by winning the Best Rock Vocal Performance.
