Released on January 23, 1989, the gospel-tinged power ballad "Eternal Flame" will go down in history as The Bangles' last single to reach the top of the global charts. The song was written by lead singer Susanna Hoffs with the songwriting team of Billy Steinberg and Bill Kelly, who had previously penned hits for other pop artists such as Cyndi Lauper and Madonna. Inspired by Graceland's Eternal Flame, as well as by Billy Steinberg's visits to a local synagogue as a child, the track was composed using the ABBA song form, a structure widely used in American popular music during the first half of the 20th century. Shortly after its release, "Eternal Flame" became one of The Bangles' biggest hits, peaking at Number 1 in the US, the UK, Australia, Sweden, Norway, Portugal, the Netherlands, Ireland, and Belgium. Despite the song's massive success, inner tensions within the group would lead to its breakup in 1989. In the years that followed, "Eternal Flame" was covered by Australian boy band Human Nature and British girl group Atomic Kitten.
