In the late 1970s, British prog-rock group The Alan Parsons Project set out to record an album about women, celebrating their strength and the problems they face in a world run by men. The album was initially intended to tell the stories of great women throughout history, but as the project unfolded it became a wider encompassing concept. Damned If I Do opens up the second side of the album, and it’s a sadly melancholic love song, where the protagonist is troubled by their romantic feelings towards the song’s subject. It is a dark and foreboding track, with sweeping string arrangements adding to its sense of drama. "Damned If I Do" was one of the album’s biggest hits, reaching the US Top 40 (peaking at Number 27). Notably, this album was the group’s first with singer Chris Rainbow, but the vocals on Damned If I Do were performed by Lenny Zakatek. Damned If I Do was written and composed by Alan Parsons and Eric Woolfson, and produced by Alan Parsons himself.
