David Byrne seemingly depicts a nocturnal liaison marked by dancing, romance, and conflict in this head-bobbing new wave knockout. On "Girlfriend is Better," the modern pop maestro cycles through a range of thoughts of emotions, from pondering on the future of the relationship to trying to talk himself into starting it in the first place. The track is the third song on Talking Heads' fifth studio album Speaking in Tongues, which gave the band their highest position on the US Billboard 200, peaking at number 15, and their biggest-selling album in Canada, where it was certified platinum in 1983. It also spawned a seminal tune in funk-drenched album opener "Burning Down the House," which drew inspiration from George Clinton's legendary collective Parliament-Funkadelic. "Girlfriend is Better" was thrust into the spotlight the following year when the song's "stop making sense" line was employed as the title of the 1984 Talking Heads concert film directed by Jonathan Demme.
