Of all the songs in Talking Heads' repertoire, "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" was the closest the group ever got to writing a full-blown love song. Written by and produced by the band, the song is built upon a simple ostinato pattern that repeats throughout its entire duration, hence the "naive melody" in its title. According to Byrne, he intended to write a love song avoiding all of the clichés associated with the genre. Included as the closing track of their fifth studio album Speaking in Tongues (1983), it marked a departure from the bands' experimentation with African polyrhythms and funk music, opting for a simpler, poppier structure. Shortly after its release as a commercial single, "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)" peaked at Number 62 on the Billboard Hot 100 and reached Number 52 on the UK Singles Chart. A live version from the concert film Stop Making Sense (1984) was issued as a single in 1986 and went to Number 100 in the United Kingdom.
