Even though their debut single "Wordy Rappinghood" topped the disco charts in the US upon its release in 1981, nothing could have prepared American new wave act Tom Tom Club for the overwhelming success of their follow-up single "Genius of Love." Formed by Talking Heads drummer Chris Frantz and bass player Tina Weymouth while on a touring hiatus, Tom Tom Club's infectious blend of post-disco, new wave, and funk took over the dance floor in clubs all over the world and commercially outperformed everything they had done up to that point with their main band. Written by Adrian Belew, Chris Frantz, Steven Stanley, and Tina Weymouth, "Genius of Love" was released on September 6, 1981, and became an instant hit on the R&B and dance charts all over the world, reaching Number 1 on the US Disco Top 80 chart and peaking at Number 31 on the Billboard Hot 100. Thanks to the incredible popularity of the song, its parent album Tom Tom Club climbed to Number 23 on the Billboard 200 and went Platinum in the United States. In the following years, "Genius of Love" gained new life after being sampled extensively by artists like Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde, Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, and Mariah Carey.
