After spending his early musical years carving out a career as a country artist in Nashville, innovative singer-songwriter Steve Earle conceived a unique musical marriage in 1988 that led to an even more unique label from Rolling Stone – "power twang." The Virginia-born artist alleged he was the first to meld country music and heavy metal, and on flagship album Copperhead Road (1988) – often described as his first "rock record" – he takes a leap of faith to show you what he's made of. Bringing to mind the outlaw country spirit of Waylon Jennings, but folding a little Springsteen and some hefty guitar action into the mix, the politically minded LP went to Number 56 on the US Billboard 200. "Copperhead Road" distills some of the album's overriding themes into a country-folk barnstormer (also spawning a line dance) about a Vietnam War vet heading home. Steve Earle would later go on to record an album called So You Wannabe an Outlaw, so you could say that "Copperhead Road" helped to pave the way for his outlaw country ways.
