Penned by Steppenwolf's lead singer John Kay, "Rock Me" was the band's fifth US single release, a curious, rootsy ramble through an undiscovered world that comes to a head in the chorus: "I don't know where we come from / Don't know where we're goin' to / But if all this should have a reason / We would be the last to know / So let's just hope there is a promised land / Hang on 'til then / As best as you can," ponders John Kay. Produced by Gabriel Mekler and released as a single in 1969, "Rock Me" is the piece de resistance of the Canadian-American rockers' third studio album, At Your Birthday Party, (1969) which was put out by ABC Dunhill Records and held significance as being the first of the band's albums to showcase bassist Nick St. Nicholas. It was also their last to feature axe-wielder Michael Monarch, who parted ways with the "Born to Be Wild" and "The Pusher" hitmakers in August 1969.
