As the album opener for The Marshall Tucker Band's 1973 self-titled studio debut, "Take the Highway" serves as both a declaration of principles and an introductory statement to the band's psychedelic take on Southern rock and country music. Written by main songwriter Toy Caldwell, the track is a 6-minute epic journey throughout different music genres such as bluegrass, jazz, gospel, and folk. The tale of a man who can't commit to staying in one place for too long, "Take the Highway" features two back-to-back guitar and flute solos and perfectly showcases the group's instrumental prowess. Even though the song didn't enter any charts at the time of its release, it went on to become a classic among Southern rock fans and a staple of the band's live repertoire. The Marshall Tucker Band, its parent album, entered the Billboard 200 at Number 29 and was certified Gold by the RIAA shortly after.
