Taking notes from the likes of Creed and Nickleback, "Through the Ghost” builds on the searching post-grunge melodies and strings-brightened alt-rock that peppered Shinedown's 2008 opus The Sound of Madness. The Florida-based hard rockers are equally capable of cranking up their guitars as they are of turning on the taps of pure emotion, and this tune a testament to the latter. Closing out the band's 2012 album Amaryllis, the orchestral rock of "Through the Ghost" explores a relationship that has suddenly gone sour. "All the bridges we built were burned / Not a single lesson was learned / Everything that mattered is just a city of dust covering both of us," sings Brett Smith, but flips the script of the song to do some soul-searching of his own. Ultimately, the track gives us an intimate insight into the mind of Brett Smith, who explained that he had begun to stare at himself in the mirror from time to time and felt like he was "looking at a ghost".
