The raunchy, synth-laden mega-hit "SuperFreak," the second single off of Rick James' 1981 album Street Songs, was a Number 1 R&B single on both the Billboard and Cash Box charts in the fall of 1981. One of the most influential and innovative artists in the funk music genre, Rick James is known for his unique vocal stylings and his flamboyant onstage persona. "SuperFreak" was released on April 7, 1981, and debuted at Number 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It also spent five weeks at Number 1 on the US R&B singles chart. Written by Rick James and frequent collaborator Alonzo Miller, "SuperFreak" describes the lavish lifestyle of a sexually adventurous woman that spends most of her time hanging out with musicians. The song became both Rick's breakthrough hit record and one of the biggest crossover hits in musical history, receiving a nomination for Best Male Rock Vocal Performance at the 1982 Grammys. In the following years, "SuperFreak" was sampled by rapper MC Hammer on his 1990 hit single "U Can't Touch This."
