“Play That Funky Music” is one of the most popular songs in the history of the funk rock genre, but it almost didn’t happen at all. By 1974, the band Wild Cherry had already split up after several years of making rock music. Frontman Rob Parissi had temporarily quit the music industry. But he reformed the group in 1975 and started working on new song ideas. When he heard an audience member ask “are you white boys going to play some funky music?,” an idea came to Rob Parissi, and the song started taking form. It was originally intended as a B-side, but eventually the group promoted the song to an A-side. “Play That Funky Music” was a massive success, hitting Number 1 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart. It eventually achieved Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America, for sales of over 2 million records in the United States. It received an American Music Award for Top R&B Single of the Year. In 2018, Billboard magazine named it one of the All-Time Top 100 Songs.
