The R&B-minded vocal trio of Harry Ray, Al Goodman, and Billy Brown spent the early '70s securing a string of hits as the Moments – including "Love on a Two-Way Street," "Sexy Mama," and "Look at Me (I'm in Love)" – before they became Ray, Goodman & Brown in 1978 and moved to Polygram. That's when their much-loved ballad "Special Lady" was born. Written by Harry Ray, Al Goodman and Lee Walter, and produced by Vincent Castellano, the song showcased the group's signature ‘sweet soul’ sound and became an unlikely crossover hit at a time when public interest in classically sentimental soul had begun to wane. The smooth romantic jam "Special Lady" topped the R&B charts in 1979 and reached number five on the pop charts too, no doubt helping to lengthen the group's tenure with Polydor, where they stayed until 1981, also turning in another Top 20 hit in 1980 with "Inside of You" in 1980.
