Originally released on his 1984 seventh studio LP Various Positions, Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a strong contender for one of the most covered songs in the history of modern music. Despite having been criminally overlooked at the time of its release, "Hallelujah" took on new life in the early 1990s after being covered by John Cale and Jeff Buckley, who recorded the most well-known version of the song on his 1994 studio debut Grace. Written by Leonard Cohen in the span of five years, "Hallelujah" makes extensive use of numerous biblical references as a metaphor for a romantic relationship gone sour. The Canadian folk legend wrote nearly 80 different verses for the track, which he alternated between the original recording and its 1988 live version. In the following years, the track entered popular culture through the 2001 animated film Shrek, and has since been covered by numerous artists including Rufus Wainwright, k.d. lang, Alexandra Burke, and the a cappella group Pentatonix, whose vocal-heavy version peaked at Number 2 on the Billboard Holiday 100 and reached the Top 10 in countries like Austria, Germany, Hungary, and Switzerland.

The cover version is terrible, but that isn't important even though it is impossible to not notice. I love the background vocals and the one without background vocals. -
