You can sometimes judge a song by its title alone and in the case of Paul Cauthen's 2021 single "Country as Fuck," that adage certainly rings true. For the opening track of his 2022 album Country Coming Down, the bellowing East Texas native goes in all guns blazing to deliver a caustic, sharp-witted, funk-drenched takedown of so-called bro-country that feels rooted in the rhythm of hip-hop as much as the outsider spirit of outlaw country. "I'm a shade tree mechanic / Got a one-ton truck / I drink a 30-pack a day / Cause I'm country as fuck," he begins, sing-rapping his lines before making a pair of knowing contemporary references: "Call me Lil Nas / Call Me Tim McGraw / Not a moment too soon / I had horses in the stall". Country Coming Down was the follow-up to Paul Cauthen’s 2019 album Room 41, which chronicled some of the hair-raising days he spent in the Dallas hotel room of the record's namesake.
