Oklahoma-born country star and US Navy veteran Zach Bryan made his voice heard loud and clear on 34-track opus and major-label debut American Heartbreak (2022), bringing to life a Carson McCullers-esque collection of southern gothic characters with their tales of hardship and everyday life. Originally released as a single in 2020, a re-recorded version of "Oklahoma City" appears as the 15th track on a triple album that spans folk, country, and rock. The track finds Zach Bryan in fireside storyteller mode once again as he wistfully wonders about the whereabouts of an old friend. "I told her that you moved way out west / To write some songs and grow a little more bitter / The kids talk about you around here / Like you're some kind of legend / I wonder if they know a thousand sunrises ago / You were eager just like them?", he reflects in the first verse.
