“Of Wolf and Man” is a song from Metallica. Singer James Hetfield said it’s a song about the animal in all of us. The lyrics describe a wolf-like existence, shapeshifting between man and beast. “We shift / Pulsing with the earth / Company we keep / Roaming the land while you sleep.” This lone wolf tendency was described in a 2000 Playboy interview. Writer Bob Tannenbaum said he’d never seen a band so quarrelsome. Each member expressed their need for solitude. In their 2003 film Some Kind of Monster, the band documented working with a counselor in group therapy sessions while recording their album St. Anger. Bassist Jason Newsted quit the band after the first 9 1/2 hour session. While the band came to reject their counselor, ten years later they’re still together with their new bassist Robert Trujillo.
