"Blackened" is a song recorded by American rock band Metallica. It starts with an eerie fade-in, created by reversing the guitar tracks, and immediately crashes into one of the heaviest Metallica tracks ever recorded. Its dark lyrics about the end of civilization are a perfect lyrical fit. "Callous frigid chill / Nothing left to kill / Never seen before / Breathing nevermore." The song was the first co-write between new bassist James Newsted and the larger-than-life Metallica frontman James Hetfield. Newsted described being a bit starstruck with Hetfield. The two were hanging out and playing guitars together at his one-bedroom apartment when Newsted played the riff from “Blackened”. Hetfield immediately asked, "What's THAT?" and the rest is history.
