Ever since their debut in 1994 with the album Portrait of an American Family, Florida shock rockers Marilyn Manson have become a staple of the US alternative rock scene, largely thanks to frontman Brian Warner's penchant for controversy. Released in 2003, their fifth studio album, The Golden Age of Grotesque found them fusing their industrial metal and glam rock leanings with a marked vaudevillian aesthetic, as evidenced by the promotional singles "Mobscene" and "This Is the New Shit." Written by Brian Hugh Warner, John William Lowery, and former KMFDM member Tim Sköld, the latter was inspired by both Dadaism and Warner's love for hip-hop instrumentals. Even though it didn't make it to the pop charts in the United States, "This Is the New Shit" reached Number 29 on the UK Singles Chart and entered the charts in Australia and several European countries. Additionally, a remix by English band Goldfrapp was included as the second track on the album's UK release.
