For their third studio album Mechanical Animals (1998), Marilyn Manson eschewed the fully-fledged, hard-edged industrial metal of previous efforts like 1994's Portrait of an American Family and diversified their style, bringing glam rock and synths into the mix. The chart-topping LP served as response to the success of their breakthrough 1996 LP Antichrist Superstar, which rocketed the band's career to a wider stage, and explores themes relating to fame, perfection and celebrity. Harrowing rock ballad and Mechanical Animals standout "Coma White" is the last track on the album and dives deep into the aforementioned themes, notably in the pre-chorus ("You were from a perfect world / A world that threw me away, today / Today, to run away") and the self-medicating chorus: "A pill to make you numb, a pill to make you dumb / A pill to make you anybody else / But all the drugs in this world / Won't save her from herself."
